Gold
Gold is the most malleable and ductile of all metals. Among other metals, gold is the most desirable. Gold has been known and highly valued since early civilization. It may have been the first metal utillized by humans and was highly appreciated for ornamentation and rituals.

Despite the malleability of gold, pure gold is too soft to withstand daily wear and tear. Usually gold is alloyed with other metals such as copper, silver, nickel and zinc for added durability and strength. The purity of gold indicated by karatage or commonly known as 'k'. Purest gold is indicated by 24k mark followed by lesser number. Each number specifies the percentage of gold content in an alloy.

There are few types of commonly known colors of gold. The color of gold is determined by the percentage metal alloy and and types of alloy.

White gold is common nowadays and more afforable than platinum, assuming you are seeking white colored precious metal. The karatage of white gold is similar with yellow gold. Pure silver or fine silver is too soft and easily damaged by daily wear. Thus it is common to combine with other metals for added durability. One of the most popular alloy is sterling silver, which consists of 92.5 percent of silver and 7.5 percent copper. The finess of silver usually marked by .925 or sterling silver.

New type of alloyed silver such as argentium silver is very similar to sterling silver and starts gaining popularity. Argentium silver characteristic quite similar to sterling silver except it does not tarnish.

All silver except argentium silver, tarnishes easily and proper care should include cleaning with high quality silver polish. Constant wearing also prevent tarnish built-up.
